The State Council of Higher Education is set to present a renewed proposal to the UT administration, urging an increase in the retirement age from 58 to 65 for teachers at both private and government colleges in Chandigarh. This matter, frequently raised by educators across the city, has been awaiting a decision from the UT administration.

In recent months, various educational institutions have advocated for an extension of the retirement age. Arun Kumar Grover, the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University and the Chairman of the State Council of Higher Education, emphasized the necessity for a uniform retirement age across all educational institutions. He pointed out the disparity in retirement ages for teachers allocated through the UPSC in Chandigarh compared to other Union Territories like Delhi, Pondicherry, and Goa, where the retirement age is 65.

Grover noted that while the retirement age was raised to 62 at PEC, there remains a discrepancy at Chandigarh College of Architecture, where it remains at 58. Stressing the need for consistency, he stated that addressing this issue is crucial for promoting Chandigarh as a knowledge city. A proposal addressing this concern will be promptly submitted to the administration for consideration.
